April 26, 2007 NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop; Music and the Moving Image Conference May 15-25 series held in memory of Disney composer Buddy Baker by Marilee Bradford New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development (NYU), in association with the ASCAP Foundation, will present its 2007 NYU Film Scoring Workshop, May 15 through 25 at the Frederick Loewe Theatre in New York City. Courses will address spotting and timing, orchestration techniques, conducting and various other production aspects of film music. Participants will score a film clip of their choice in a recording session of top professional musicians, and will leave with a digital demo of their work. Instructors include noted composers and orchestrators Mark Snow, David Spear and David Matthews, as well as NYC film scoring faculty members Ira Newborn, Deniz Hughes, Mike Patterson and Director of NYU Film Scoring Studies Ron Sadoff. ASCAP will sponsor presentations on the art and business of film music with director and music supervisor Alex Steyemark. Up to twenty participating composers will be accepted. Auditors may attend all proceedings, including the live recording sessions and critiques. This marks the university's third workshop since 2003, held in memory of Disney composer Buddy Baker, a pioneer of film music education at NYU and USC Thornton School of Music who helped develop the workshop program. As part of the ten-day workshop, a conference on Music and the Moving Image will run May 18 through 20, exploring the relationship between music and visuals in film, television, computer, iPod, and multimedia. 74 participants from all over the world – along with conference committee members musicologist/conductor Gillian B. Anderson, CUNY professor and author Royal S. Brown, CUNY professor and author Elisabeth Weiswill, and Sadoff – will discuss a diverse range of topics. Accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in the new peer-reviewed journal, Music and the Moving Image (University of Illinois Press).
