Dan Carlin Heads Berklee Film Scoring Program
Noted music director/editor brings insight and industry connections to undergrad movie music curriculum

Boston, MA, August 21—Award-winning music executive Dan Carlin has been appointed Chair of the Berklee College of Music film scoring department. He replaces founding Chair Don Wilkins, who launched the department in 1979.

Carlin won a music-editing Emmy for Under Siege (1986) and an Emmy nomination in music direction for the mini-series The Temptations (1998). He was music supervisor and principal conductor, for the Golden Globe-nominated film scores to The Black Stallion (1979) and Last of the Mohicans (1992). Among his dozens of music- and/or sound-editing credits are Steel Magnolias (1989) and The Wedding Planner (2001). He has served as music supervisor on such song-driven scores as Sister Act (1992) and What's Love Got to Do with It (1993).

Carlin co-founded and was CEO of Segue Music, the largest and most successful music post-production business in Hollywood history. Over the company's 25-year run, he collaborated with countless music artists including Usher, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Smokey Robinson, Queen Latifah, Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett, Whoopi Goldberg, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Phil Ramone, David Foster, Georges Delerue, Danny Elfman and many others.

Carlin served as Executive Director of the Henry Mancini Institute from 2004 to 2007. He recently completed two terms as Chair of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, and has served for more than 20 years on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Music Executive Committee.

He helped fund and develop a composer program at The Sundance Institute; created and co-sponsored Berklee's first internship program for film scoring students; co-designed and taught in the UCLA film scoring program; and consulted for the ASCAP Composer's Workshop. He is a frequent contributor to panels, seminars and lectures.

"These are very challenging times for young musicians entering the film and music business," says Carlin, "and I hope that my industry experience, affiliations, and insights will help Berklee maintain its reputation for providing the best real-world preparation anywhere for emerging music professionals."

Nearly 300 students currently major in Berklee's undergraduate film scoring program, which offers study in film music composition, orchestration, MIDI sequencing, conducting, and digital music editing. The department facilities include a scoring studio complex with scoring-to-picture capabilities and digital audio/video post-production suites.
